eight weeks of vacation. >> eight weeks of vacation? >> eight weeks, yes. >> like most frenchmen, marchand has no guilt about taking so much time off. in fact, it's the law. full-time workers in france are guaranteed at least five weeks vacation and a maximum 35-hour work week, with no paid overtime allowed. and not everyone is thrilled about working even 35 hours. >> the aim is to keep your job without working. >> welcome to 60 minutes on cnbc. i'm leslie stahl. in this episode, we'll examine our relationship with work. how much is too much, too little, and who should decide? but before we look at the hours we spend on the job, we'll look at how employers tried to influence the way their workers act off the job. as morley safer reported in 2005, that cigarette or drink at home, that political candidate you supported, even your eating habits are coming under the scrutiny of your employer. if your boss doesn't approve, it might even cost you your job. >> anita epolito and cara stiffler were considered model employees at weyco, an insurance consulting firm outside of lansing, michi
also included in this package of improvement and city project for the connector road a vacation of the northeastern portion of quint street. that is in the diagram, the red area. that area actually operates two areas of properties as they work to plan the relocation of those digesters. this package in the connector road project intends to really maximize that compatibility and facilitate that process that we've heard support for. finally, the purpose of this request is to really iron out some of those final questions and issues that the community has raised that we haven't been able to answer quite yet given the phase of design we're at. there are two pieces of recommendations. the first is to recommend support for cal train to proceed with design of their option one, the berm option for the bridge replacement. that includes allowing them to work with the schedules and coordination with the connector road project to make sure that we're able to minimize that gap enclosure. the second piece of this recommendation is to provide funding for the next phase of connector road design.

these days. as in: use your vacation days... or lose it all. let's talk to jake reid of expedia for some travel tips. good to have you on the show this morning. you look awfully cool. > > [laugh > > thanks for having me, and you are absolutely right - a lot of americans are losing it, and they are not taking their vacation days. we want to help travelers feel comfortable booking that trip and taking advantage of the vacation days they have. i certainly did that. i am down here in miami beach, fla., at the palms hotel and spa, taking a little vacation from the rainy seattle weather that i am getting used to now this winter. > other than where you are right now, what are some other great locations, some last- minute deals? > > we are seeing a lot of travelers on expedia book in three places: doing what i did, which is to come to the beach, get away from the cold weather and escape and relaxe. there is also a big trend of ski vacations, taking advantage of lake tahoe or vail, colorado, and really getting away with the family. and then of course, it's the holidays, so you have to go see gran
process which we're doing now or alternatively go through a street vacation process so they can maintain the building fully inside their property line. we found out from planning that the vacation of public right of way is typically in contradiction to the general plan and therefore they requested us to go through this major encroachment process. the department in its evaluation does not believe this would necessarily be an appropriate permit for either the city or the applicant specifically. this permit will only grant a license to the property owner to maintain this and it would definitely place a cloud on the title, which may impact future sales and/or refinancing of that property. >> supervisor wiener. >> thank you. this matter is sort of perplexing to me in a number of ways and i don't know that you are going to necessarily have all the answers. are you here for this matter? is anyone from planning or dbi here? >> i don't believe so. >> i'm just curious to know how this happened. i mean i guess, from what i understand, when the plan was submitted the property line between the p
working through the pc you saw there and that vacated piece of property. the vacation of that northeastern portion of quint is more recent addition to the connector road project. it actually was added more recently. initially the option one, berm would have included the vacation of the piece of quint street, that is directly at the tracks in order to do the berm but that additional piece up on the northeast portion was added. the reason that was added is actually twofold, one, to facilitate potential staging of both projects concurrently. the berm or bridge replacement project and the connector road project. vacation of that area allows potentially more staging for both of those projects to happen together and minimize that gap in construction time closure. it also does facilitate the poc's master planning process. as i mentioned earlier, working with the poc as one partner in looking at what other funding options are available to reduce that prop k request or how the pc can be involved in this process moving forward. that is something we will plan to work with pc on and come back in the s
irresponsible actions of both sides going on vacation. there have been suggestions, notably by warren buffett that congress should not get paid and not have health insurance until they come to an agreement. >> i think there is a lot of negotiating behind the scenes, maria. staffs are meeting almost constantly. but you raise a good point and interesting point. the optics as washington likes to call it, of going on vacation when you have a fiscal cliff looming, if you don't have an agreement are simply awful. boehner has already told the republicans that nobody is going on vacation until this thing is settled. i think the democrats are probably going to say, pelosi and reid will say the same thing for the democrats. i wouldn't be surprised if congress stayed in session maybe all the way until the 21st of december. this is going to be not to put too fine a point on it, a cliff hanger with regard to the fiscal cliff. i think there will be some movement. in other words, they will not go on vacation unless there's some agreement about what a framework is going to be or some way that they are going
the course of these negotiations and forego any plans he has to take a holiday vacation? >> i think congress has a strong role to play here. as we've said all along, while we are getting closer and closer to the end of the year, how we achieve the deal here is not that complicated. we still believe we can make it happen. the president is focused very much on trying to make that happen. >> he actually wanted a deal that worked, something he's the only one that's going to have a pen that can sign that. >> you are the president of the united states. you have that mighty pen. you bailed out the banks. bail out the american people that don't have homes for holidays. >> i think no member of the house or the senate or the president should go on vacation before you have handled this. >> he has a vacation already planned? >> i know he does. >> there's simply no middle ground here at all. >> will the president stay in town through the course of these negotiation? >> meanwhile the president wants to spend $4 million for a vacation at the end of the year in the midst of what is a huge crisis. >> comprom

in the news media repeated this white house talking point. >> president obama cutting short his vacation in hawaii, heading back now to washington. that will happen tonight to work on the fiscal cliff deal. >> the looming fiscal cliff is forcing president obama to cut short his christmas vacation. >> president obama is cutting short his christmas vacation. he is leaving hawaii tonight so that he can be back in washington when congress reconvenes tomorrow. >> laura: so we should believe that by leaving his island enclave that the president was making some big sacrifice for the country? i'm thinking washington, crossing the delaware on a bitter christmas night 1776 before going on to defeat the british in two major battles, that's sacrifice. i, for one, never understood how in good conscious any of these politicians would think about leaving town with so much riding on this cliff hanger? shouldn't they get their work done before they leave town for a break? that's what's expected for most working americans but then again washington politicians have rules of their own. people whose salaries

he just left you after a visit, a visit which he had hustled to accomplish on route after a vacation when abbey called to say you passed away when after he left and turning back and heading back to apy and the boys and heading back to you and how characteristic it was for you to see david before you died. how very milton the gesture was and i knew you waited not so much for yourself but david would feel such profound remorse the rest of his life had he missed the chance to say goodbye to you and this is the generosity in the years i knew you and the 19 years we lived together. your gifts to me during your life were often made of time, consideration, and affection and shrewd and intuitive understanding that the most prized gift is the one the recipient feels you would give no one else. this is why the 1965 los angeles metropolitan police department manual you gave me in 1986 remains one of my favorite books of all time, and you remember you know how i devour books and i am the only criminal defense attorney in possession of such a treasure. do you remember when we spent that long e
